Biographies
Art From the Streets attracts a hundred or more different people to the studio classes every year – Most come in, make a picture or two and the go on their ways. Here are the stories of a few of our most consistent, loyal, and productive artists.Debbie Overs (Zebra)
My name is Debbie Overs. I was born in England and came to the U. S.
when I was 2 years old. My father was in the military so we lived several
places. I was in Korea from 1963 until 1966. At that point we moved
to Austin and I have been here ever since.
Several years ago I was staying outside the old Austin Resource Center
for the Homeless in my big four door Buick along with Stacy in her Jeep.
Girls weren’t allowed to stay in the ARCH so we stayed in our
cars. I heard about the art class and started attending. [more…]
Dennis Williams
My name is Dennis Williams. I was born where the Colorado River meets
the Gulf of Mexico in Matagorda County-Bay City, Texas. I have been
in Austin on and off for about 5 years. I heard about Art From the Streets
while I was in the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless. Someone
said, “You want to come paint?” so I did. I have been a
part of the program for 4 years.
The things I like the best about being involved in Art From the Streets
are painting and the money. It makes a nice Christmas. [more…]
Howard Cook
"My name is Howard Cook. I was born in
Austin, Texas. I have lived here all my life.
I first heard about Art From the Streets from Heloise and Christi.
They told me I should come in and do some art. I blew them off. Finally
I came in and they put my art into the show. It sold. I thought, “Hey,
I’ve got something here.” I have been a part of Art From
the Streets since the 3rd show, about 13 years.
I enjoy making art. I like having a craft to sell. Thank God I have a
craft that sells." [more…]
Hugh Miles
My name is Hugh Miles. I was born in Knoxville, Tennessee. I have lived
in Austin since 1986. I have been a part of Art From the Streets since
1991. I was on the street corners and just walked into it. I came in
and knew it was a part of me.
My favorite part of Art from the Streets is a bunch of people who have
the same talents and desires that I do. I get to make a little profit.
It’s exciting to be recognized and appreciated for my talent.
It makes me want to do more. I love interacting with people. Being here
is not isolated. [more…]

My name is Shaneka Campbell. I was born in Austin, Texas and have lived
here all my life, for 29 years. I heard about Art From the Streets from
my friend, Keifred who is in the program. I have been a part of the
art class for 3-4 years.
My favorite things about art class are making people laugh and smile,
and donating art to those who can’t afford it. I love painting.
We can show our emotions through our painting. [more…]
