Art From the Streets
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of art will be featured?
Most art at the show will be paintings using acrylic paint or drawings using pastels or pencil. All styles are represented, from traditional to abstract, expressionist to art nouveau. Some pieces are mounted on foam core and shrink wrapped. Hang tabs are mounted to the back of each piece so they are ready to hang. There are also some loose pieces in bins that you can mount or frame on your own. What should I expect at the show?
If you’ve been to a gallery opening, you’ll see that our show is not that different. It’s held in the lobby of ARCH, Austin Resource Center for the Homeless. This is a safe and clean facility where homeless people can get the resources they need for daily living. During the two days of the art show, regular activities stop while the center transforms into a gallery setting. The artists hang their artwork on the walls and place unmounted pieces in bins. You’re free to browse at your leisure, then take the pieces you wish to purchase to the checkout area. There will be plenty of volunteers on staff to assist you if needed.Should I buy something?
Yes! A piece of art from Art from the Streets gives you a personal connection with a piece of art that you can treasure forever. You’ll have a one-of-a-kind expression from a member of society not usually heard from. More than just a beautiful work to hang in your home, you’ll have the satisfaction of knowing that you helped give hope to someone trying to regain independence in the world. Will I get to meet the artists?
Yes! Most artists will be near their featured work to discuss their work and answer any questions you may have.Where do the proceeds from the sale go?
Almost all of the money from the sale of a painting goes straight to the artist who created it. A small portion is used to cover the expense of mounting and shrink wrapping. Proceeds from the sale of unmounted work goes directly to the artist.Do I get to take purchased pieces home the same day?
Yes. You can take them off the wall or out of the bins and check out whenever you like. (Please be sure you definitely want the work before removing it from the wall. A team of volunteers works to replace each piece that has been removed.) Some pieces are mounted on foam core and shrink wrapped; hang tabs are mounted to the back of each piece for easy display. There are also some loose pieces in bins that you can mount or frame on your own.Do you take credit cards?
