AFTS to Participate in 17th Exhibition of The People’s Gallery
Austin, Texas is home to a rich fine arts scene. Austin art events include a wide variety of fine arts experiences, including art shows. Every year, the Cultural Arts Division of the City of Austin presents The People’s Gallery at City Hall. The goal of the City of Austin’s Cultural Arts Program is to present public exhibitions that reflect the cultural and artistic excellence and diversity present throughout Austin communities while promoting the city's cultural and economic initiatives. This year, Austin celebrates the 17th Exhibition of the People’s Gallery with displays of curated visual art in all the public areas of Austin City Hall, including the public plaza and mezzanine. This annual exhibition is a display of local and regional artwork seen by over 210,000 visitors every year.
While Austin City Hall is not a traditional art gallery, it is still an excellent venue for the display of visual artworks; it is accessible to anyone interested in viewing the work of local artists during The People’s Gallery exhibition. The People’s Gallery is part of an ongoing exhibition series presented annually at Austin City Hall. It helps to promote local artistic endeavors and is designed to showcase regional artists and their work, from paintings to photographs to sculptures and more, while also stimulating public dialog about art in general and encouraging greater understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts. The artworks presented at the Exhibition of The People’s Gallery are varied.
The People’s Gallery exhibition is one of the most popular annual Austin art events. Five artists from Art From the Streets Artist have paintings that have been selected to be shown as part of the exhibition this year. They are (in no particular order) Cathy Haynes (“Bird on a Wire”), David Schumaker (“Leaf”), Jeremiah Hurta (“Eyes Have It”), Jesùs Polanco (“Running Man”), Larry Williams (“Vision”), and Tom Jett (“Circular”).
The People's Gallery Exhibition Opening Reception is on Friday, June 3, 2022, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Austin City Hall (301 W. 2nd Street Austin, TX 78701). Visitors will be able to view artworks throughout City Hall, meet the artists, and enjoy light refreshments and live music from local musical artist JC Stringz. The event is free and open to the public, and registration is not required to attend. The 2022 exhibition will remain on display through May 1, 2024. Attendees may purchase artworks available for sale. For more information, visit The People’s Gallery web page at https://www.austintexas.gov/department/peoples-gallery.
If you are interested in adding a visit to The People’s Gallery to the list of Austin art events you want to experience this year, consider attending the Opening Reception of this Austin art show this weekend. And if you want to learn more about the Art From the Streets (AFTS) artists participating in The People’s Gallery exhibition, or to view creative artworks made by other transient artists from the area, take some time to visit AFTS as well.
Art From the Streets is an Austin-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was established in 1991 to give transient people a way to develop as artists and to use their creativity to climb out of homelessness. Purchasing artwork supports the artists directly. Donating to our program helps us to offer a free Open Studio for the homeless and at risk.
